Writing Table

Eucalypt, plywood, silk, pearls, glass beads

785w x 435d x 745h mm

This piece was designed around a board I found at my local timber supplier.  I was bewitched by its subtle figure and by the density of borer holes just at one end.  The board was only 11cm wide and just 3m long, so I developed a design that would maximise the timber, by re-sawing it into veneers and finding some matching timber for the legs.

I chose a writing table as I have started to think about the lost art of writing.  Like the light from distant stars that may reach us after those stars have faded, a hand written letter captures a moment in time and space which can be evoked each time the letter is read and re-read.
